Strong Foundations

Our City Build

Our new building is beginning to rise from the ground and take shape. In this Y Vibe post, we share about the journey that got us here and the foundation work that has made this progress possible.

The foundations of our city site redevelopment stretch way back to before any concrete started being poured. It was a dream, then an idea, and then a plan which began to be fleshed out with real details and timelines and prices.

Through the consultation process, this idea gained a clearer outline and more details began to be filled in. Extensive discussion with our community helped inform what the purpose and function of this new building should be. We knew we wanted to continue providing our community-based activities and programmes but the idea grew to include a licensed preschool and more youth spaces.

We kept hearing one key point from lots of different voices: We want the building to feel like a Y – lots of different people doing their own thing, in their own way, for their own reasons – and everyone accepting everyone for who they are.

Shifting from consultation to design is the moment for all building projects when it becomes very ‘real’. For us, this realness was shared with a feeling of great excitement and security as we realised our carefully selected design team was as excited about this build as we were. That core team has become a key ingredient in our strong foundations – a bunch of super talented and passionate people in whose hands we know our building is safe!

Another contributing factor to the sturdy foundation of this build is our diehard Y community who have stuck with us through thick and thin. We are talking about our gym members, our hotel guests, our tenants, our supporting organizations and neighbours. If someone were to ask us what sets us apart from other city builds it is this community we would point to – steadfast and hopeful, exactly the kind of people you want to have in your corner when undertaking a project like this.

Some of us are really enjoying seeing the concrete being poured and the walls start to rise, while others are just counting down the days till we can move in to the new building. What we can all agree on, however, is that something momentous is happening and, as with all momentous things, it is important to have strong foundations.
