Par for a Cause

It was a day of fun in the sun last Friday for the 19 teams of philanthropic golfers who participated in our annual Charity Golf Tournament. 76 players rocked up to Weedon’s Country Club for the event along with a small team of YMCA staff who helped out with everything from registrations, scoring, barbequing a sausage sizzle lunch, and taking photos.

From team registrations, selling raffle tickets, and the charity auction, we raised a grand total of $15,500 for YMCA Christchurch. That’s pretty impressive for a Friday afternoon and it’s all thanks to our big-hearted supporters – many of whom have been playing in this tournament for years.

A huge shout out to our sponsors of the day – Happyhire, Dominion Constructors Ltd, BESIX Watpac, Life Fitness, Kamo Marsh, Dr L R Acker Dental, Strawberry Sound, Muscle People and Rhodes & Associates – we couldn’t do it without you.

More than just a day of golf, the tournament is always full of people connecting and having fun (along with a healthy amount of competition and golfing banter).

Players teed off just after midday and spent the afternoon out on the green. Christchurch blessed us with a sunny day and a gentle nor’easter for which all of the teams were grateful! Teams were also grateful for the refreshments cart which zoomed around the course offering encouragement and hydration as needed.

The format of the event was Ambrose which, for the non golfers among us, means everyone in the team tees off then the team picks the best shot amongst their members and all play from that spot. This continues until the ball is in the hole. Each team mate must drop the ball within a hand’s length of where the chosen ball sits and each team records just one score per hole.

Once all the teams were back in, and after catching up for a drink, the winners were announced and prizes were given for the top ten teams plus some skill-based prizes for the longest drive and closest to the pin.

We have been running this annual event since 2012 as a way to raise funds and connect with our supporters. Friday’s event was a great example of why we started doing this – a chance for people to give generously (through their team registrations, buying raffle tickets, and participating in the charity auction) while also having a really great time.

We are interested in the type of giving that feels good and in creating opportunities to celebrate the generosity of our partners. And judging by comments made on the day, we know our supporters will be back for another year in 2022.
