Young Artist Development Programme

16 December 2021 - 22 December 2021, Daily 9am-late
YMCA Christchurch, 12 Hereford Street

YMCA Christchurch has partnered with renowned New Zealand artist Flox (Hayley King), to bring an exceptional and unique opportunity for aspiring young artists of Ōtautahi, or those who are interested in stencilling and/or large scale mural painting.

Flox’s trademark native birds, ferns and flowers are a celebration of Aotearoa’s environmental taonga. Using distinctly vibrant and confident colour on a scale combined with delicacy they have magically transformed grey walls into vibrant depictions of the natural world.

About the Programme

We will create a large scale mural in the central city under Flox’s artistic curatorship. This specially curated programme will combine a technical component about cutting stencils as well as 5 days of spray painting – both free hand and using stencils.

Flox’s teaching philosophy is to share, inspire and pass on the knowledge that has been gathered across an artistic lifetime.

The programme will run for 7 full days from Thursday 16 December to Wednesday 22 December, 9am – late (times to be confirmed, and may vary from day to day depending on the weather/energy etc).

The fee for this programme is $425 which covers tutor fees and materials (students maybe required to provide their own ventilator mask – confirmation to be provided in the pre-workshop info). If you are unable to cover the cost of the course please ensure you check the scholarship box on your application form as we do have some scholarship spaces available.

Who Can Apply

Year 10 – Year 13 students (or 14-18 year olds), with a keen interest in learning more about street art and/or stencil art.

We are looking for young people who will make the most of this awesome opportunity – who want to learn heaps, are self-motivated and are hard working.
