The YMCA Fitness Centres remain open and normal operating hours are in place under Alert Level 2. Please sign our contact register on each visit and use our QR Code to track your movements. Be mindful of social distancing from other gym users, and be aware that some equipment may need to be closed off to ensure this. Class number restrictions will apply. Please ensure you continue to wipe down your equipment after use, practice good hand hygiene and stay home if you are unwell.
The YMCA Health and Fitness Centres are conveniently located – one in the centre of the city opposite the Botanical Gardens on Hereford Street, and the other at Bishopdale Mall.
Both our City and Bishopdale Fitness Centres are competitively priced making it affordable for everyone. As well as offering both senior and student discounts, we also have corporate wellness packages available aimed at getting co-workers into the gym to help motivate each other. The environment is welcoming to those of all ages, fitness levels and walks of life.

John has been a Fitness Instructor at the YMCA for 30 years. He is REPs registered and holds a qualification in Exercise as Medicine and was a Gym Instructor Runner Up in the New Zealand Fitness awards. John is a passionate cyclist and spin bike instructor and has completed numerous multi-day endurance cycling events. His specialist fields are cycle mentoring, strength/conditioning and injury rehabilitation.
Erin trained and worked as a physiotherapist for a number of years before joining the YMCA as a fitness instructor. She has been with the Y now for over 20 years, so has considerable experience in the field of Health and Fitness. Erin is REPs registered, and also holds a recent qualification in Exercise as Medicine. Her specialist fields lie in rehabilitation – joint replacements, neurology, injury treatment and prevention being amongst them.
Antonio has been a gym instructor at the YMCA for just over a year. He is REPs registered and is a qualified nutritionist. Antonio’s passions lie on the sports field. As he has played a sport for most of his life. Some include cricket, football and hockey.
Antonio’s specialist fields are Bootcamp style workouts, Sports conditioning, stretching and flexibility and basic beginner gym skills.

Ken has been a fitness instructor at the YMCA for 7 years. Throughout his time at the Y Ken has become an extremely experienced and enthusiastic trainer who takes pride in helping people from all walks of life and fitness levels to achieve their goals. If he’s not working on the gym floor with new members, or training his regular clients, you can usually still find him in the gym doing his own routines where he will always be up for a chat. Ken is REPs registered and specialises in strength/conditioning, toning and muscle building training.
Michelle has been a Fitness Instructor at the YMCA for 17 years. She is REPS registered and qualified level 4 Personal trainer, teaching a variety of group exercise classes. She has been runner up twice in the New Zealand Fitness awards (2018, 2019) – category: Group Fitness Instructor own choreography. Michelle has a passion for adventure and encourages exercise to enhance well-being while maintaining a balanced life style.
Michaela has been with the YMCA for 7 years as a fitness instructor and personal trainer. She is passionate about not only making you fit and healthy but also firmly believes that exercise does wonders for your mental health and wellbeing. She believes the YMCA is the place for that. Michaela has trained clients from all ages, abilities and walks of life. Her specialties include cardiovascular training, box fitness, HIIT styled training and toning and conditioning.
