Indoor Rock Climbing

at the Adventure Centre

The YMCA Adventure Centre is a modern facility which we maintain to the highest health and safety standards.

In the main arena there is climbing terrain to challenge all ages and abilities, with 46 top ropes in position and over 100 set routes (over 80% are leadable).  We also have a dedicated bouldering area full of interesting challenges.

Our staff are friendly and knowledgeable and we pride ourselves on the consistent delivery of great guest experiences. The YMCA Climbing Centre is a welcoming environment and a social hub for local and international visitors – beginners and experienced climbers alike.

So come on down to the YMCA Adventure Centre!  We are easy to find, centrally located just 100 metres off Moorhouse Avenue.  We are open 7 days a week and have a full range of hire equipment available.

  • Please do not attend the Centre if you are unwell, displaying Covid-19 symptoms or awaiting a Covid-19 test result.
  • Whilst in the Centre, please maintain a distance of 2m from other users.
  • The use of masks and Government safety recommendations versus requirements is a bit unclear and open to interpretation. We have decided that masks are encouraged to be worn but also recognise that for some they make breathing and/or communication difficult. We ask all participants 12 years and over to have a mask to wear in circulation areas and to wear them as much as possible while in the centre and belaying. Masks will not be required to be worn while climbing.
  • Regular cleaning will be taking place throughout the Centre.
  • Please ensure you scan in with the COVID Tracer App upon arrival.
  • Remember that you will also have to sign into the Centre at the front desk.
  • The Climbing Wall side of the centre will have a maximum capacity of 60 people. This is to allow participants to observe the 2 meter distancing requirements.
  • During peak times at the Centre, when we reach the capacity of 60 people we will operate a one in, one out system. To find out how busy the centre is, please call us on 03 3773000 and we can advise you on current numbers. It is not possible to book or reserve a space for casual climbing.
  • There are times when we have groups booked into the Centre and as such will have reduced space for the general public, please see below.

Entry & Induction

We offer a range of deals to suit casual and regular climbers at the YMCA Adventure Centre.

Special deals are also available for Schools, Groups and Birthday Parties.

Anyone visiting the centre for the first time is required to go through an induction process and climbers under 16 years of age are required to have a parent or guardian sign the registration form.

There is no minimum age to climb, but please note that climbers must be at least 13 years of age to be able to ‘belay’ other climbers unless they have gained a Top Rope Belay Licence and are climbing with the Flying Geckos climbing club.

If you want to have a go at climbing at the Adventure Centre please come on down for an induction with one of our qualified instructors.

All first timers to the Center must go through an induction.  The initial entry payment $30 provides all the gear you need, entry and registration.  For those with their own harness and shoes there is a discount on the initial induction entry fee ($24). During the week induction briefings run at 12pm, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm and 8pm, or on weekends at 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm.  If there are a group of you coming down please use the Book Here button below to ensure we have space for you.  For more than 6 people please email us to book in a session with us with your very own personal instructor.

Following your induction you’re part of our climbing wall family and can use the facilities as and when suits you, have a look into our membership options for discounted options on our everyday entry fee.
