Aim for the highest cloud so that if you miss it, you will hit a lofty mountain
For over 25 years the YMCA Christchurch has provided programmes that offer a safe and positive learning environment for young people in education, training and employment related skills.
Our FREE COURSES aim to raise self-esteem, confidence, and motivation to develop life skills in each student so they can realise their potential and achieve.
The YMCA core values are built into the design and delivery of all our Education programmes.
The YMCA Education programmes, based at 12 Hereford Street, offer a range of FREE fulltime courses for young people, aged 16-19, who are no longer enrolled in mainstream school or other tertiary training. All courses aim to re-connect and engage students with education and learning by working within a small group, which caters for individual needs in a stimulating, supportive and safe environment.
Through our Youth Guarantee Courses we offer NCEA Opportunities for 16-19 year olds. Literacy and Numeracy support is offered to all students, one-on-one and in small groups, to assess and develop their literacy and numeracy skills and enhance their learning outcomes.
As a registered accredited provider we offer NZQA approved courses (NCEA L1, NCEA L2) aimed specifically towards young school leavers up to and including 19 years of age, catering for individual strengths.
We motivate and educate young people so they can pathway into desirable training and employment outcomes through our foundation qualifications, meeting eligibility criteria for vocational training and entry level employment goals.
Students study a variety of unit standards depending on their goals. NZQA National Certificates are recognised by employers, and used for entry selection by universities and polytechnics, both in NZ and overseas.
Educational programmes are delivered under subcontract agreement with the National Council of YMCAs of New Zealand (NZQA Registered PTE).
This qualification is intended to support a student’s transition to NCEA or vocational pathways of study. Learners focus on self-management, teamwork, communication, core study skills and career-exploration.

This qualification offers a contrast to traditional school subjects and units offered are sourced from Work and Study skills, Computing, Community, Communication and Business and Service NZQA documents.
It will enable students to enter vocationally specific study beyond Level 2 qualifications.

We offer this introductory 4 day course as a taster experience for young people that have an existing interest in rock-climbing and abseiling, or a good base-level of fitness.
This Skills Active package is an ideal way for young people to experience the possibilities of a career in outdoor recreation.
