Dance Ambassadors is a programme originally created and managed by Dance and Performance in 2013 and gifted to YMCA Christchurch in December 2015. Dance Ambassadors aims to strengthen and support the Christchurch dance community through the promotion of active engagement with dance in Christchurch Secondary Schools. The programme runs in an annual cycle with events and activities taking place throughout the school year.
The 2016 programme is set to kick off this week with twenty of the Ambassadors taking part in a masterclass with the Royal New Zealand Ballet at the YMCA’s City Dance Studio on Wednesday (11th May) ahead of seeing company class and the latest production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ at the Isaac Theatre Royal on Saturday.
This will be the first of a series of events held for the Ambassadors over the coming months which are set to include workshops and masterclasses with local and visiting national and international dance artists as well as opportunities to experience training experiences, watch touring dance works and create their own choreography for a high school dance showcase later in the year.
YMCA CEO Josie Ogden-Schroeder is delighted to have this Ambassadors project under the wing of the YMCA and is looking forward to dance being a core component of the Y’s arts delivery over the coming months and years. “I am a personal fan of ballet in particular! It is the penultimate foundation of dance – if you can do ballet, you can do anything. I am excited to join in with the RNZB workshop on Wednesday – but I’ll be in the back row!” said Ogden Schroeder.
