The YMCA of Christchurch trainers pride themselves on their professionalism, industry and exercise expertise and their ability to make people of all shapes and sizes feel comfortable in the gym environment.

Our current Personal Training team are: 

 

John Edlin:  John has a wealth of knowledge and experience, having been in the fitness industry for over 20 years. He has dedicated his career to improving individual’s health and well being.

John’s area of expertise is extensive. John is particularly passionate about cycling and working with older adults.

John was the 2009 runner up in the New Zealand Gym Instructor of the year. This prestigious award reflects John’s stature in the industry.

If you are after an training session which is fun, social and motivating, John is the personal trainer for you!


Paul Dunn:  Having been involved competitively in numerous sports from a young age, Paul has always had a passion for sport and fitness. Paul has developed an extensive knowledge base from his representative sport experience and academic studies.

Paul has had great success with a huge variety of clients ranging from the corporate businessman, to the full-time mother, to the ‘mature and motivated’. His training is based on sound physiological principles not on fallacies, generated by unfounded emotional opinion, personal beliefs or television infomercials.

His specialist areas include golf and other sport-specific training, core conditioning, weight loss and fitness and strength improvement.

Paul is based at the nine million dollar Bishopdale YMCA complex, located behind the Bishopdale Mall. The complex boasts a spin studio, circuit studio, fully equipped gymnasium, squash and basketball courts. Bishopdale Park is also a great outdoor alternative option. As your personal trainer Paul has access to all these facilities, which makes for a personal training session with a ‘difference’.

Specialist Areas: Cardiovascular training for weight loss, general fitness and strengthening. golf and other sports specific training, core conditioning.
Qualifications: Bachelor Degree in Physical Education and Executive Personal Training Certificate.


Erin Armstrong:  Rehabilitation! Mobilisation! Pain management! Erin has had over 10 years in the fitness industry, previously working as a physiotherapist before becoming a fitness instructor.

Erin can individualise a programme for your specific needs, and assist you in implementing it. She is flexible with venue and time, and happy to work with you or your family either short or long term.

So, if its arthritis, a stroke, joint replacements, post-op rehabilitation, diabetes, cancer recovery, dementia, cardiac issues, high blood pressure, or simply a lack of motivation causing decreased fitness, strength, balance or weight problems, see Erin!

 

Taryn Higgan:  I’m a gym trainer, personal trainer and group fitness trainer here at the YMCA. After completing my Personal Training certificate level 3 at NZIHF in 2010 I began working in the fitness industry. I believe I have found my true passion.
I thrive on learning, motivating and helping others to reach goals.
