There is no minimum age to climb, but please note that climbers must be at least 13 years of age to be able to ‘belay’ other climbers unless they have gained a Top Rope Belay Licence and are climbing with the Flying Geckos climbing club.
All first timers to the Center must go through an induction. The initial entry payment $30 provides all the gear you need, entry and registration. For those with their own harness and shoes there is a discount on the initial induction entry fee ($24). During the week induction briefings run at 12pm, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm and 8pm, or on weekends at 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm. If there are a group of you coming down for your first climbing experience it pays to give us a call to reserve spaces, we can take up to 6 people per induction. For more than 6 people please phone ahead to book in a session with us with your very own personal instructor.
Following your induction you’re part of our climbing wall family and can use the facilities as and when suits you, have a look into our membership options for discounted options on our everyday entry fee.

A number of climbing competitions are held at the Adventure Centre throughout the year.
We have hosted National Lead Climbing and Bouldering competitions run through Climbing NZ as well as rounds of the National Indoor Bouldering Series run through the NZ Alpine Club.
In addition to this we also host the Canterbury Regional and South Island Secondary School competitions.
The NiBS is a fun, all-abilities series of bouldering events held at climbing walls around New Zealand between May-August every year.
Bouldering is a type of rock climbing, usually up to about 4m using pads for protection instead of ropes. Because it doesn’t require lots of gear and technical instruction, it doesn’t matter if you are new to climbing or a boulder boss, you’ll have a great time!
The second round is being held at the YMCA Adventure Centre Climbing Wall on 17 June 2017 – register here
Entry is just $10 NZAC Members, $20 non-Members, and there are thousands of dollars of awesome category and spot prizes from our generous sponsors ChalkyDigits, Uprising and Bivouac/Outdoor to give away.
These events are always awesome, don’t miss out! Click here for more information.
National Sportclimbing Competitions are managed and sanctioned by Climbing New Zealand. They also select New Zealand teams to compete in International competitions.
New Zealand’s top climbers compete in the National Cup Series, which is made up of three events – bouldering, lead climbing and speed climbing.
The National Cup Series is followed by the National Championships.
To compete at a national level, climbers are required to belong to a club.
These events are always awesome, don’t miss out!
Held once each year, the one day (Canterbury) and two day (South Island) Secondary Schools Climbing Competitions are an engaging, physical and fun event for all those involved. The competitions promote climbing to young people and schools as a sport or recreational activity as well as instilling teamwork and a creating a sense of fun and friendship.
These events are not just for climbers. We encourage students of all abilities and experience to get a team together and have a go! At all times experienced instructors are on hand supervising and ensuring the highest safety is maintained.
The South Island Secondary Schools competition is on 6 – 7 September 2017. Fields of up to 100+ individuals form teams of four and represent their schools in a points accumulation style comp.
We offer a wide range of courses for beginners, intermediate and experienced
