The YMCA has one of the biggest climbing walls in the South Island with over 75 routes. In the main arena we have created a climbing area to challenge all ages and abilities with top roping or lead options. With a separate bouldering space offering numerous set problems, we cater for all styles of climbing.

New Climbers Welcome
Climbing is a fun, exciting sport that everyone can do. At the YMCA Climbing Wall we offer a 'Free 20 Minute Intro to Climbing' for complete beginners and infrequent climbers, which is a great opportunity to 'give it a go'. The 'Free 20 Minute Intro to Climbing' is available at the start of every public hour and will show you all the safety procedures needed to be able to climb.

Please Note: Adults can only be belayed by another adult or child over the age of 14. Belayers who aren't climbing are free. Offer excludes hire.

The Main Arena:
In the main arena we have created a climbing area to challenge all ages and abilities. We have added new walls through the years in order to continually improve and upgrade. With over 75 routes on slabs, vertical faces, aretes, overhanging walls and roofs you are sure to feel the burn whatever your ability. We want every visit to YMCA Climbing wall to offer you something new so we have over 5 route setters who set up to 5 new routes every week.
The Bouldering/Training Room:
In the boulder'n space there are various set problems at any time, graded between V1 and V7 upwards. With two campus boards, numerous routes set on all styles of wall we have created a varied and challenging boulder'n environment.
New to Climbing:

Public Climbing Wall Hours:
In public climbing hours there is always a floor manager at hand to offer advice, basic safety tuition or assistance. At the YMCA our inclusive atmosphere, whether you're a beginner or pro climber creates an encouraging, relaxed and fun environment. Public Climbing Hours for top ropes, lead climbing and bouldering are available at the following times:
Monday – Friday 5:00pm – 9:00pm
Saturday – Sunday 1:00pm – 6:00pm
Children under the age of 14 years old must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver, unless authorized by management.
Lead Climbing and Bouldering Hours:
Experienced climbers with their own equipment wishing to lead or boulder outside of public hours can, between 8am and 5pm. This is by arrangement only due to having group bookings throughout the day. Please call 03 963 2828 for the climbing walls availability.
Please Note:- The wall isn't supervised at these times, so you climb at your own risk! The YMCA's Code of conduct must be adhered to at all times.

2hr Intro to Climbing:
This course is a more advanced, in depth version of the 20 minute intro session. The additional time allows you not only to perfect the basic safety skills to be able to Top Rope in an indoor environment but also to start developing and improving your climbing technique. This course makes a great gift.
Cost: $40 + 2 free climbing passes
Duration: 2 Hours
Dates: Fortnightly on Wednesday. Feb- Dec
Learn to Lead Climb:
Mastered the basics and want more? This package allows you to migrate from top roping to the more adventurous lead climbing over two sessions. Our instructors will show you how to clip correctly, guide you through the problems encountered whilst lead climbing and develop your climbing technique.
Cost: $70
Duration: 2x 2 Hours
Dates: Every 2nd Thursday Feb- Dec
Technique Clinic:
Do you feel that you could climb better, but just don't know how? Our two hour technique class is designed for people who are climbing between grades 14 to 20. Our instructors will cover hands, feet and movement on the wall techniques which will help you climb more efficiently and effectively.
Cost: $35
Duration: 2 Hours
Dates: On Request (1 week notice please)
Pathway to the Outdoors:
This 4 hour course gives you the opportunity to climb at local crags using top ropes. This course will enable you to fully absorb the challenges of climbing on real rock in a controlled environment. You will learn to climb safely and be trained to use outdoor climbing equipment
Cost: $50, Min 4 people
When: Saturdays – October onwards

The top ropes can be used by groups at anytime, via a booking system. We provide instruction, equipment and custom designed programmes to suit your needs.
