YMCA Basketball
YMCA Bishopdale Basketball Coaching Training and Competition League
The YMCA invented Basketball and consequently it is no surprise that we run a great basketball training and competition league for children. In 2009 - the YMCA won at the Canterbury comps. Get your child involved and see them develop skills, friendships and a team spirit while also staying fit and healthy.
All classes, squads and individual team entry fees are $70 per term.

Skills Development Classes (5 - 12 year olds)
5 - 6 year olds: Junior Mini Ball
An introduction to basketball witha focus on co-ordination, ball skills catching, passing, dribbling and shooting. Smaller balls and lower baskets make for fun sessions.
7 - 8 year olds: Mini Ball
An introduction to basketball with a focus on co-ordination, ball skills, catching, passing, dribbling and shooting. Games are also introduced at this age group. Small balls and lower baskets make for fun sessions.
9 - 12 year olds: Beginners Basketball
Learn to play the game, skill development in easy progressive steps and introduction to the rules of the game. Most players will be capable of playing in a game after a term in beginners.
Hoops Training Squads (9 -16 year olds)
C Squad
Skill based development aimed at advancing players to a competent level. Introduction to team play.
B Squad
Skill based development with introduction to team concepts. Introduction to Multi-skill drills.
A Squad
Introduction of advanced fundamentals, offensive and defensive concepts and advanced team play.
Elite Squad
Introduction of advanced fundamentals, offensive and defensive concepts and advanced team play.
Basketball Competition (Individuals)
Year 5 - 8 (Terms 2 and 3 only)
Individual children can join a YMCA team to take part in our competitions. This proramme provides each YMCA team with training and a coach for the games.
This eight week programme includes 2 weeks of coaching prior to the competition starting and a half hour session each week during the competition.
Basketball Competition (Team Entry)
Year 5 - 6 and Year 7 - 8 (Terms 2 and 3 only)
A 6 week competition. Cost $120 per team.
YMCA teams:
Individual children can join a YMCA team to take part in our competition.
Each YMCA team is provided with a training and a coach for the games. Two weeks of coaching prior to the competition starting and a half hour session each week during the 6 weeks of competition.
SCHOOL teams:
To enter a school team you are required to provide a coach or supervisor for the team. Team entry forms are available from Bishopdale YMCA 3 weeks prior to the competition start date.
The YMCA provides a floor controller and referees for all games. Teams must play in the same colour t-shirt/singlets with numbers on them. We can provide some uniforms if required.
Cost $120 per team per term.
Player Registration
The Canterbury Basketball Association requires every player to be registered to compete. There is a one-off cost of $60 per team which is payable from term one onwards. The YMCA is the collection agent for this fee.
